A Memorial Day Reflection

The founding of America was based upon Christian Principles. In the Declaration of Independence, God is referenced four times through four unique titles. These titles include Nature’s God, The Creator, Supreme Judge of the world, and Divine Providence. Founders such as Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin understood that men’s consciences are bound to a reality much higher than other people or government (Proverbs 9:10).

“MEN’S CONSCIENCES ARE BOUND TO A REALITY MUCH HIGHER THAN OTHER PEOPLE OR GOVERNMENT.”

Turns out when children are taught that they are nothing more than evolved apes in a world full of purposelessness, many evils persist. The goodness and freedom we see around us in modern day America does not come from that worldview. Rather, it is the Christian worldview that has provided all of the true goodness and true freedom that we see around us today. The secular worldview being largely propagated in the public school system today is there alongside the freedoms we get to enjoy, but is far from the producer of it. To better explain what I’m trying to say, let me provide an analogy. Think of an NFL team that has just won the Super Bowl, and therefore, does not practice the following week. That habit of not practicing is taking place alongside the success, but it is certainly not the producer of it. The success was given rise to through the practice and all of the hard work leading up to the Super Bowl.

Tying this back to what we are talking about, God is the supreme purpose-giver. The work ethic, practices of loving neighbor, the founding of universities and hospitals, and so on, are all avenues that have helped provide us with the liberty and quality of life standards that we enjoy today. By the grace of God, such avenues still stand despite the infiltration of the secular worldview. God gave us work; people turn their backs by placing profit over people or neglecting work altogether. God gave us our neighbors and the ability to love; people turn their backs by failing to love and failing to serve through their gifts. God gave us the ability to learn and He gave us universities; people turn their backs by seeking knowledge apart from God and His precepts (Proverbs 9:10). God gave us medicine and hospitals; people turn their backs by trying to reduce everything to mere biochemcal processes instead of considering the transcendental nature of each human being. We must stop the backslide taking place in our culture; we must stand for truth no matter the cost (John 14:6).

In light of all of this, today being Memorial Day, I want to say thank you. Thank you to all of the men and women who have given their lives defending and helping to sustain all of the rights and freedoms we get to enjoy as Americans (John 15:13). Thank you for standing for the freedom that allows me to type words on this page, allowing the innovation to take place that has and upholding the first amendment of the Constitution. Every good gift and every perfect gift comes from above (James 1:17). How amazing it is that God guides people in helping produce various good and perfect gifts. To the family or loved ones of such people to whom I express my sincere gratitude, thank you for your strength and perseverance. Know that if your loved one’s Faith is in Christ and your Faith is in Christ, you will see your loved one again, and we can all share in the perfect and unadulterated freedom of our Lord when creation is redeemed (Romans 8:20-28).
