As people have now turned their calendars to September, another change is seen on the horizon: fall. The changing colors of the leaves, cooler temperatures, and new activites to look forward to are just a few elements that people cherish about the fall season. If 2020 has made us all realize one thing, it is this: change is constant. However, as we see in the anticipation of fall, some changes are greater and more wanted than others.
“WHAT’S GOING ON AROUND MAY CHANGE, AND IS INDEED ALWAYS CHANGING, BUT THE ROCK THAT UPHOLDS US IS IMMUTABLE.”
We are constantly changing; even from one moment to the next. This is why people tend to exercise and take nutrition more seriously in the first place; people want to change their body and change their mindset. The cells in our body are constantly dying and being replaced. Even our bones are remodeled once about every 10 years. Yet, we are still the same people. So, even with all of the change, there is a constant piece of us that remains steadfastly. Therefore, in order for change to be possible, there has to be a standard of immutability.
Even though we are constantly changing, we have faith in the One who does not change (John 1:1, and Hebrews 13:8, and Malachi 3:6). We can rest assured in this. Our feet do not have to be positioned on sinking sand, but can be held sturdy on solid rock (Matthew 7:24-27).
Indeed, the year 2020 has brought unforeseen change. Last year at this time, how many of us would have thought the world would look this way? Even so, if our feet are on the solid rock, not even a year such as this can sweep us away. Through new changes that are still approaching such as the start of a new school year, new work situations, and new living situations, if our feet are placed on solid rock, we still cannot be swept away. What’s going on around may change, and is indeed always changing, but the rock that upholds us is immutable.
Knowing that change is constant, we do not have to view change as a bad thing. Matter of factly, many people love fall BECAUSE of the change that it brings. After all, who gave us seasons in the first place? Though there may be a lot of uncertainty with change, we know that we can have faith in the One who is immutable, who plants our feet firmly on solid rock. With all of this said, let us all look forward to the change that fall can bring us all, knowing that a new season can bring forth new opportunities . . . and we will be that much closer to 2021.
